Buying the Right Car

Choosing Between New, Used Or Certified Pre-Owned

by JEFF ZYGMONT, ForbesAutos.com

"I wanted a brand-new, shiny car like the ones I saw in the showroom," says Faith Newman, 38, of her choice to lease a new Mercedes-Benz C-class sedan from the dealer in New York City. After a decade in the recording industry, Newman had signed a couple of music acts that sold millions of discs. "It seemed like the right time to reward myself," she says. Her decision stemmed from the prestige that the vehicle brand conferred. "It gave me a real good feeling to look out and see the Mercedes emblem on the hood."

Unfortunately, not everyone is blessed with Newman's easy decision.  Nowadays, car ownership has so many variables that it has become an onerous task just choosing between a new or used vehicle--or "pre-owned" vehicle--as car marketers prefer to call used models.  The decision today is more complicated because of the introduction of manufacturer-certified pre-owned vehicles.  With so many car-buying options, how can you buy the car you want and still get everything you need?
For starters, determine your personal definition of automotive value.  Then use today's abundant resources to find the best deal that matches your desires.  Finally, be flexible, because opportunities abound. Know what questions to ask when you start shopping for that vehicle.
