Bond only gets to be a passenger in the white Toyota 2000GT driven by Japanese secret agent Aki (played by Akiko Wakabayashi). But she comes to the rescue memorably in her stunning and expensive two-seater, credited as the first Asian supercar.

In the film, the car is a convertible, supposedly because Sean Connery was too tall to fit in it otherwise. But the public could buy only a hardtop version.

Though some fans sniffed at putting Bond in a Japanese car, Toyota’s2000GT is an exotic beauty. It has an odd front end, with large driving lights below pop-up headlights. But its swept-back appearance — with a long hood, blistered fenders and delicately tapered rear end — makes for some Bond-worthy eye candy.

The 2000GT was also a technical marvel in its time, with the most advanced engineering available, including independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes and a six-cylinder engine made by Yamaha. It’s a rarity, as less than 350 were made. And it’s highly sought after, even today, reportedly fetching six figures at auction in recent years.

Did You Know …

• The Toyota 2000GT was not available to the public as a convertible, but two prototypes of the convertible version were created to be used in the shooting of the film. One is in Toyota’s museum.
