Alfa Romeo GTV 6

Octopussy (1983, Roger Moore) — $126 million*

The Alfa Romeo GTV 6 — which Bond swipes from a German woman — gets to show off briefly in a high-speed chase with police.

This car boasts some eye-catching elements. It shares the sharp lines and artfully arched hatchback of its predecessor, the Alfetta GT. But the overall esthetic of the GTV 6 differs from the daintier Alfetta. It uses larger bumpers and black trim in place of the older car’s chrome bits — both trends of the ’80s, which in retrospect did little to improve automotive aesthetics.

The Gadgets:

None for this stolen car.

Did You Know

• Giorgetto Giugiaro, one of the most famous Italian car designers of all time, helped design the Alfetta, the predecessor of the GTV 6. (As you might recall, Giugiaro also worked on our No. 2-ranked car, the Lotus Esprit.)

• Bond uses a Mercedes-Benz 250 SE in a separate chase involving trains. The car’s tires go out, adapting it perfectly to a ride on the railroad tracks. But the drive is cut short by an oncoming train. To avoid the inevitable smashup, Bond leaps from the roof of the car onto a passing train.

• Bond also briefly drives a Volkswagen Beetle in the film.

• Vijay Amritraj, who fends off the bad guys with a tennis racquet in one Octopussy scene, was a professional tennis player before becoming an actor.
