Starred in:
• On Her Majesty’s Secret Service (1969, George Lazenby) — $93.6 million*
The Aston Martin DBS is featured in the opening sequence of On Her Majesty’s Secret Service, where Bond rescues his future wife from her attempted suicide in the ocean. It also gets an important scene at the end of the film. Newlywed Bond drives off on his honeymoon, only to have his wife gunned down soon after.
The shooting happens when the happy couple pulls over to remove wedding decorations. A black Mercedes-Benz 600 sedan cruises by, driven by Ernst Stavro Blofeld, Bond's arch enemy. Gun in hand, Irma Bunt leans from a window and kills Bond’s bride, Countess Teresa “Tracy” de Vicenzo (played by Diana Rigg).
The DBS that debuted in 1967 marked a major change for Aston Martin after nearly a decade of the same style car. The look is totally different than its predecessor — lower, wider by nearly six inches and with four headlights set into a new interpretation of the trademark Aston Martin grille. Despite its departure in design, the DBS wore its new creases and angles just as beautifully as any Aston Martin before.
The DBS also makes a brief appearance in Diamonds Are Forever (1971, Sean Connery).
The Gadgets:
• None shown, except for a sniper rifle hidden in the glove compartment. (Bond fans still question the lack of bulletproof glass, which might have changed Tracy’s fate.)
Did You Know …
• Diana Rigg is one of the few Bond girls to be older than the lead actor.
• Her character drove a Mercury Cougar convertible in the film.
