Designed for crawling along open, varied terrain, the Hummer H1 Alpha represents the off-road ideal. The H1 can cross streams up to 30 inches deep and climb a short ramp an incredible 72 degrees upward when necessary. Its ground clearance is better than any other new utility vehicle, but maneuvering around trees or obstacles on a normal off-road trail can be frustrating. Its driving manners are far more truck-like than any other SUV on the road; there’s not much in the way of comfort, and performance from the 300-hp turbo diesel V8 might be good for off-road situations, but it’s barely adequate for bringing 8,000 pounds up to speed. And then where do you park?
