The very distinctive LR3 replaced the rugged-looking Discovery, a model that boasted impressive off-road ability but wasn’t nearly as desirable for on-road journeys. Thanks to an all-new design that incorporates a sophisticated system called Terrain Response, the LR3 is more capable both off-road and on. Terrain Response allows the driver to select one of five modes for the type of terrain — road, slippery, mud/ruts, sand or rock crawl — and the air suspension automatically adjusts ride height and ride stiffness to suit. In addition, engine and transmission calibration is catered for the terrain, and traction control and hill-descent control help maintain stability off-road. It handles much better on the road than its tall body might hint, too.
The interior is designed very well, with three rows of seating — the third row with enough room for average-size adults. If you don’t need the added seats for people, they fold down with the second row to yield a cavernous cargo area.
Finally, what makes the LR3 especially alluring is its price. Starting at $48,525, it’s one of the best bargains on our list.
