The charming Simon Templar (Roger Moore), also known as The Saint, rescues beautiful women from dangerous men and frustrates authorities with his less-than-legal shenanigans in this popular British TV series from the '60s.
The role of Simon Templar is based on a detective from the Leslie Charteris books, but the television series depicts him as more of a spy. It seems fitting that after the series ended, Roger Moore went on to play James Bond in the movies. The two characters have a lot in common. Both are dashing and sophisticated British playboys who champion justice but often have to elude the police. Both enjoy a wealthy lifestyle with extensive travel, high-stakes gambling and, of course, enviable cars.
For Simon Templar, it is a Volvo P1800. The car is seen often throughout the series, sometimes in lengthy and dizzying chase sequences. Templar initially drives a 1962 model with several updated versions of the white sports coupe appearing in later years. Fans complained that this sometimes created continuity errors with the older cars still being used in some of the scenes.
Forty years later, The Saint continues to be associated with the Volvo brand. In the 1997 film version starring Val Kilmer, he drives a red Volvo C70 sports coupe that features some stylistic details borrowed from the P1800.
