2006 BMW Z4 Model Update

The Z4 Powers Up

BMW updates its roadster with subtle styling tweaks, more power, a hot M version and a seductive coupe.

by Matthew de Paula, ForbesAutos.com

BMW's Z4 Roadster gets subtle restyling, more powerful engines and, most importantly, a new high-performance M version and a seductive hard-top coupe.

The M Roadster features the same engine as the M3 coupe, a 3.2-liter in-line six-cylinder generating 330 horsepower. Exterior styling includes more aggressive front and rear-end treatments than the base Z4 and a pair of creases in the bulging hood that intimate added power lurking below. It also has unique 18-inch alloy wheels. (Read more about the 2006 M Roadster in our Reviews section.)

It goes on sale in June, along with new versions of the regular Z4 — the 3.0i and 3.0si. The former replaces the 2.5i from last year and features the 215-hp six-cylinder engine from the new 325i sedan, along with a six-speed transmission. The 3.0si replaces last year's 3.0i and receives the 255-hp six-cylinder from the new 330i sedan and a six-speed manual.

A new six-speed automatic transmission with steering-wheel-mounted paddles for manual shifting is optional on the Z4 3.0i and 3.0si. Front and rear fascias have been restyled along with other trim and mechanical trim tweaks, including some major advances in brake technology.

The Z4 3.0i will sell for $36,295 including destination charge, 3.0si will sell for $42,795 including destination, and the M Roadster will go for $51,995 including destination.

A hard-top Z4 coupe is also coming to the line-up this year.
