When we earlier compared Porsche 911s to BMW 6 series, we weren't joking. We think the Porsche convertible and Targas are more visceral cars, and clearly they are more track-bred, with less forgiving suspensions. Or to put it another way, my wife loved the feel of the 6 series from the passenger seat, even after a trip to a wedding and back and all the driving involved. And she thought it was very hot to look at as well.
Of Porsches, she says she "respects" them, which tells you a lot about which one would be OK to bring home for good.
And there were lots and lots of other people ogling this car as well. They've seen Porsches; this was new.
But that doesn't make the decision easier if you're really in the market. And we certainly wouldn't rule out the other competition, either. But as we said, this BMW is more about driving, especially on tight, twisting roads, where both the Jag and Benz are less likely to feel at home, let alone seat-of-the-pants, howl-to-the-moon fun.
Still, it depends on what you really want. And "want" is the operative word -- these are dream cars, with few flaws, and brilliance in almost embarrassing quantity.
If you can afford one, by all means, go for a test drive.
