The S60 isn't the most nimble or fastest sedan on the market, but if you opt for the T5 model (starting at $32,045), it won't matter a bit. Floor the gas, and its power will pin you to the seat. One 9-year-old passenger, usually impressed only by Dodge Vipers and Lamborghinis, was beside himself with glee after a few bursts of acceleration from stoplights.

The midsized 2006 Volvo S60 sits between the larger S80 and smaller S40 sedans and has a wagon variant called the V70. It comes in three flavors: the mild 2.5T (starting at $30,270), the spicy T5 ($32,045) and the extra-hot R model ($37,920).
The S60 faces tough competition from the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Cadillac CTS, Infiniti G35, Mercedes-Benz E Class and Saab 9-5. As with all Volvos, safety is an S60 strong suit — it performs well on government crash tests and is loaded with standard features like three different kinds of airbags (front, side and side-curtain), whip-lash protection, seatbelt pre-tensioners, stability control and advanced safety structures around the cabin. Most luxury sedans today have this type of technology, so Volvo's safety edge is slight, if any.

Other than axing the slow-selling and least-powerful engine (a non-turbo five-cylinder) from the lineup, changes to the S60 for the 2006 model-year are minor. They include a new wheel style and exterior color or two, rearranging options packages and tweaking the available all-wheel-drive system. The power moon roof, leather seating, adjustable suspension, sport body package and rear park assist are no longer standalone options. They're still available as part of options packages.
