2007 Audi A4 Avant

2007 Audi A4 Avant Model Overview

2007 Audi A4 Avant Model Update

Little Wagon, Big Potential

The Audi A4 Avant station wagon can carry more stuff than its sister sedan, but tiny Euro wagons are a small niche within a niche.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com

The compact Audi A4 series is a good example of the tiny — really tiny — niche in the U.S. market for small Euro wagons.

These are morphing into small Euro SUVs also sometimes called “crossover” vehicles, for their car-like ride and handling, wrapped in a quasi-SUV-like appearance. Rival BMW of North America still offers the 3 Series wagon, but Mercedes-Benz USA has discontinued its C-Class station wagon.

The A4 has been around in one form or another for more than three decades under a variety of names. It was last redesigned for the 2005 model year, with minor updates since then in trim and equipment.

Like the Audi A4 2.0T sedan, the A4 Avant 2.0T is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline four-cylinder engine. The A4 Avant 3.2 version comes with a more-powerful 3.2-liter V6 shared with the larger Audi A6.

Audi’s quattro all-wheel-drive system is standard. Either engine can be mated to a six-speed manual or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission. Tiptronic means the driver can select gears manually.

An optional S Line Sport Package on the less-expensive models includes upgraded suspension components and performance-oriented tires to sharpen handling.

Audi A4 Avant Vehicle Summary

Four-wheel disc antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and the latest version of Audi’s stability and traction control systems are standard to help drivers retain control under slippery conditions or during extreme handling maneuvers. Front side and side-curtain airbags are standard.

Depending on the model, adaptive, high-intensity headlamps that pivot to help illuminate the road around curves are part of an options package, as well as a navigation system with Audi’s Multi-Media Interface. The Audi MMI system can be difficult to operate, but less so than BMW’s iDrive system. Audi does a particularly nice job of keeping radio channels organized with the optional satellite radio receiver.

Besides the standard Audi A4 Avant, the automaker also offers a souped-up S4 variant, similar in concept to the Mercedes-Benz AMG lineup or BMW’s M versions. There are also A4 Sedan and A4 Cabriolet (convertible) body styles.

Is the Audi A4 Avant for You?
Buy the Audi A4 if
You want a comfortable, stylish and solid-performing sporty station wagon that isn’t as harsh-riding as some of the competition; you want AWD; you need a high-quality compact car that can comfortably carry kids in the back on a long trip or can squeeze in several adults on short trips.

Keep Looking if
You need comfortable seating for five large adults; you prefer a car that skews either toward luxury or performance rather than blending the two; you prefer flashy styling.

Who Fits?
Four fit in reasonable comfort and five in a pinch; front-seat occupants will find ample room in the Audi A4 Avant; the rear seat will accommodate most passengers; the wagon configuration adds room for tall cargo.

Did You Know?
The Audi A4 series has been around for more than three decades and has been sold under a variety of names during that period. Originally offered in 1972 as the Fox, it was the automaker’s second model here after the 100 (now known as the A6). Redesigned in 1982, it was renamed the 4000 and became the first U.S. Audi to feature the renowned quattro AWD system. The car would receive yet another name change later that decade as the 80 and was subsequently rechristened with its current nameplate — A4 — in 1994. A later redesign for 2001 boasted a continuously variable transmission (which eschewed conventional gears for a series of belts and pulleys).
