The BMW 5 Series Wagon delivers an appealing blend of practical attributes with sports-car-like performance and handling. Available only in a single all-wheel-drive version, the 530xi gets added technological features as of 2007, some of which are optional. BMW calls its wagon a "Sports Wagon."
Primary among the new high-tech upgrades is an enhanced BMW Assist safety/communication system (similar to General Motors’ OnStar) that offers services like collision assistance and stolen vehicle recovery. A new TeleService function alerts owners of maintenance/repair needs and contacts them to set up an appointment at a local dealership. Every 5 Series model now comes with four years of BMW Assist. By comparison, it is optional on the less-expensive BMW 3 Series.

The BMW 5 Series Wagon now has a port that allows iPods and other portable devices to be played through the vehicle’s audio system. A high-definition (HD) radio receiver is newly optional. This system, which debuted on the 2006 6 Series, delivers CD-quality digital sound on FM stations that broadcast in the new format, with FM-quality audio on AM stations. Unlike satellite radio, HD radio is free, all broadcasts are local in nature and the radio units can receive standard analog broadcasts in addition to HD digital programming. As of spring 2007, more than 1,100 stations across the U.S. were broadcasting in HD radio in 85 of the nation’s top 100 markets.
Another new high-tech option is the BMW Night Vision system. Similar to systems offered by Mercedes-Benz and Lexus, Night Vision uses a thermal imaging camera to display a view of the road ahead on the vehicle’s navigation system screen and help expose objects otherwise undetectable by the naked eye.
The 5 Series Wagon comes powered by a six-cylinder engine. This powerplant makes use of lightweight magnesium construction and variable valve-lift technology to maximize power and efficiency. It can be mated to either a standard six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic gearbox with manual-shift capability.
BMW's six-cylinder engines, such as the one in the 5 Series Wagon, are among the most efficient in the industry. As with all vehicles, the BMW AWD system reduces fuel economy.
The BMW 5 Series Wagon includes the xDrive system derived from the BMW X3 and X5 SUVs that is also offered on the 3 Series. Front-to-rear power distribution is theoretically infinitely variable. The system improves traction on slippery surfaces as well as handling on dry roads. Servotronic speed-sensitive power steering and stability control (which adjusts the throttle and brakes to minimize wheel spin and prevent a loss of control during extreme handling maneuvers) are standard on all 5 Series models.
BMW 5 Series Wagon Vehicle Summary
The 5 Series Wagon is decently equipped, though a vehicle with a starting price above $50,000 should include such items as heated seats, rear side-impact airbags and park distance control. Unfortunately, BMW’s confusing iDrive control system remains. It uses a single large knob on the center console to control most in-vehicle functions. Although separate buttons for audio and ventilation systems have been added over the years, iDrive remains a chore to use and does the opposite of what BMW originally intended — simplify control operation.
A full range of 5 Series sedans includes two V6 versions, each with a choice of rear-wheel drive or AWD, and a V8 model. A higher-performance M5 sedan is in a class by itself with its V10 engine and other upgrades.
