2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe Model Overview

2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe

Topping off the Z4 Line

The quick and nimble BMW Z4 M Coupe proves good things come in small packages.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The potent BMW Z4 M Coupe is the high-performance, hardtop version of the somewhat more mild-mannered Z4 Roadster. By virtue of having a fixed roof, the BMW Z4 M Coupe has a more rigid structure, and therefore less noise, vibration and harshness than the soft-top BMW Z4 M Roadster.

Practical considerations are probably not the No. 1 priority for M Coupe shoppers, but the coupe’s swept-back hatchback design and the fact that there is no need to accommodate a folding convertible top creates more cargo space. It looks unlikely from the outside, but the BMW Z4 M Coupe will hold not one, but two (moderately sized) golf bags.

Minor updates include a new tire-pressure monitor and an auxiliary input jack for playing iPods and other portable devices through the car’s audio system. The optional BMW Assist communications/safety system now includes a four-year subscription. Hexagon-patterned dashboard trim replaces brushed aluminum inside, while Monaco Blue is a newly available exterior color.

BMW Z4 M Coupe Vehicle Summary

The BMW Z4 M Coupe features a number of cosmetic tweaks that differentiate it from the Z4, including more-aggressive front- and rear-end styling elements, exclusive wheels and four tailpipes. But the most pronounced upgrade is a bigger, more-powerful engine that generates more than 50 percent additional horsepower compared to the base Z4 3.0i model.

The BMW Z4 M Coupe rides on run-flat tires with a fairly stiff-riding but corner-hugging suspension, and includes a speed-sensitive limited-slip differential lock that improves the car’s handling even further. Whether careening around a curve or traversing slippery pavement, the differential lock automatically transfers power to the rear wheel with the most traction. Run-flat tires allow a driver with a flat to keep driving at a reduced speed, far enough to reach a safe place to pull off the road, and/or to reach a service facility where the tire can be repaired or changed.

BMW's Dynamic Stability Control system is included. It uses throttle and brake control to help minimize wheel spin and prevent a loss of control during extreme handling maneuvers. This system further incorporates an expanded range of braking functions. Brake Standby reacts when the driver suddenly lifts off the accelerator, anticipating hard braking, and snugs the brake pads against the rotors. Start-Off Assistant automatically engages the brakes on an incline to prevent the car from rolling back when the driver lifts off the brake pedal to depress the accelerator.

Interior flourishes unique to the BMW Z4 M Coupe include sport seats, a specific steering wheel, gearshift knob and doorsills, as well as white-on-black illuminated instrumentation. The tachometer indicates the engine’s current safe operating speed based on the engine-oil temperature; this recommended speed rises concurrently with the temperature of the oil (full throttle is indicated only when the oil is at the proper temperature).
