2007 Jaguar XJR Model Overview

2007 Jaguar XJR

Carryover Cat

The posh and luxurious Jaguar XJR growls with a 400-hp V8 under the hood.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
Jaguar is trying to get nine lives out of its XJ series of large luxury sedans, stretching it to what it considers to be five different models, led by the high-performance version, the Jaguar XJR. Yet the sporty XJR continues to stand out for its deft balance of comfort and high performance.

The XJR’s 400-hp, supercharged, 4.2-liter V8 and sport-tuned suspension are the key differences between it and the non-supercharged XJ8. Sitting still, there is not much to distinguish the XJR from other models in the XJ line besides bigger wheels and the body-color area surrounding the front mesh grille. Such tasteful understatement avoids tacky exterior add-ons like scoops and spoilers that sometimes plague high-performance versions of other luxury sedans.

Because of its sporting intentions, the Jaguar XJR comes only in the regular wheelbase, the same as in the Jaguar XJ8. For those who want the ultimate in performance but prefer a larger rear seating area and more-luxurious appointments, the Super V8 offers the 400-hp, supercharged engine of the Jaguar XJR, with the extended-wheelbase body style also found on the XJ8L and Vanden Plas models.

Upgraded wheels and tires plus a sport-tuned version of Jaguar's automatic-adjusting Enhanced Computer Active Technology Suspension combine to deliver precise handling with a relatively smooth ride. Upgraded brakes feature emergency brake assist, while stability control and traction control help maintain traction when the roads get slick or driving gets treacherous. Front side and head-curtain airbags are standard.

Jaguar XJR Vehicle Summary

Inside the handsome wood- and leather-trimmed cabin, power sport seats with perforated leather inserts are specially designed to hold the driver and front passenger firmly in place during aggressive cornering maneuvers. All seats, front and rear, plus the steering wheel are heated.

The Jaguar XJR also has radar-based adaptive cruise control that maintains both a set speed, and distance from traffic ahead; navigation; and a high-powered audio system. The few options include satellite radio and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The Jaguar XJR, along with the rest of the XJ line, was completely redesigned in 2004 with an extensive use of aluminum in its construction, which cuts weight and helps structural rigidity.

Is the Jaguar XJR for You?
Buy the XJR if
You like the XJ8 but want even higher performance and handling; you're looking for a sporty, large luxury sedan that can seat five; you prefer classic, conservative looks to modern avant-garde.

Keep Looking if
You prefer modern avant-garde styling to conservative classic; 400 hp just isn't enough, as opposed to, say, the 500-hp BMW M5 or the Audi S6 or S8; your needs would be served by a smaller luxury sedan.

Who Fits?
With sport seats up front and heated seats all around, four adults will have no problem getting cozy in the Jaguar XJR's plush cabin; a fifth fits in the back but won't be comfortable for long; shorter drivers will appreciate the standard adjustable accelerator and brake pedals.
