2007 Land Rover LR3 Model Overview

2007 Land Rover LR3

Row, Row, Rover

The midsize Land Rover LR3 gets a standard third-row seat in V8 versions.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The Land Rover LR3 gets a third row of seats in its upscale versions, the LR3 V8 SE and the LR3 V8 HSE. The company also added standard features like a premium audio system, power sunroof and leather trim to the base model LR3 V6 SE, but the third row is optional.

All LR3 versions also get a power lumbar adjustment for the driver’s seat and one-touch operation for the front passenger’s window.

The LR3 is known as the Discovery 3 in other world markets. It remains one of the most off-road-skilled SUVs around, capable of amazing feats on rough terrain.

The base model comes with a V6 engine, while a V8 engine that produces almost 50 percent more horsepower is standard in SE and HSE models.

Both the V6 and V8 engines come mated to a six-speed, electronically controlled, “intelligent shift” automatic transmission. This gearbox not only tailors its shift patterns to a motorist’s driving style, but it offers manual gear selection by tapping the shift lever. It also has a sport mode with more-aggressive shift ratios. All LR3 models can tow up to 7,700 pounds, more than many competitors.

Besides standard four-wheel drive, the Land Rover LR3 also has a half-dozen chassis control systems. Traction control, dynamic stability control and Active Roll Mitigation afford maximum security and control over a wide range of road conditions and driving situations. Cornering Brake Control, Electronic Brake Assistance and electronic brakeforce distribution help stop the vehicle quickly and safely.

The Land Rover LR3 gets stable handling and a smooth ride from its fully independent, double-wishbone suspension, with height-adjustable rear air springs.

Land Rover LR3 Vehicle Summary

A unique Land Rover Terrain Response feature allows the driver to tailor the vehicle’s electronic controls and traction aids according to five settings depending on traction conditions, including two on-road and three off-road modes for mud, sand and rocky trails.

The vehicle is fairly luxurious and comfortable inside, though dashboard ergonomics have never been Land Rover’s strong suit. Both rows of rear seats can fold into the floor to maximize cargo space. The asymmetric tailgate looks unique and eases loading and unloading of the cargo bay.

Standard features include front, front side and side-curtain airbags. Options include heated front- and second-row seats, heated windshield and windshield washers, a center-console cooler box, Bluetooth connectivity and navigation (navigation not available on the base model). Many options are bundled and sold as packages.

Rear park-distance control is only available on SE and HSE models when bundled with a lighting package that includes Xenon high-discharge headlamps.

Is the Land Rover LR3 for You?
Buy the LR3 if
You want a luxury midsize SUV that is nearly unstoppable off-road; you need seating for seven; fuel economy isn’t a concern.

Keep Looking if
You prefer a more car-like and fuel-efficient SUV and will never make use of this vehicle’s considerable off-road prowess; perhaps a sedan or wagon would suit your needs.

Who Fits?
Four adults fit comfortably and a fifth occupant can squeeze into the second-row seat for short trips; a total of seven can fit with the V8 versions’ third-row seats (optional with the base V6 model), which is best reserved for smaller adults and children; not as high off the ground as other SUVS, the LR3 still requires a step up into the cabin; the lack of adjustable pedals might be uncomfortable for shorter drivers.

Did You Know?
The LR3 is called the Discovery 3 in markets outside the U.S. It debuted as a 2005 model and is a marked improvement over the long-running Discovery model it replaces. Its modern styling blends cues from both the upscale Range Rover, such as the bold front-end treatment, and the previous Discovery model, like the stepped roof and asymmetric rear tailgate.
