2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Model Overview

2007 Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class

Coupe or Convertible?

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class goes from a small and sleek closed coupe to an open roadster in seconds.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The second-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class roadster debuted for 2005 as a more-powerful, faster, better-handling and bolder-looking replacement for the ground-breaking original, which was the first production roadster with a folding metal hardtop. The line consists of two models with six-cylinder engines, the base SLK280 and the SLK350, and the high-performance SLK55 AMG.

The SLK’s wedge-shape profile is punctuated by a nose that mimics the look of the ultra-rare and ultra-expensive SLR McLaren supercar. The powered folding metal roof retracts in about 22 seconds. Trunk space is reduced with the top down, but is still accommodating, for a small, two-seat sports car.

The base SLK280 comes powered by a 3.0-liter V6. The SLK350 has a 3.5-liter V6. A standard six-speed manual transmission drives the rear wheels on the SLK280 and SLK350, and a seven-speed automatic with manual-shift capability is optional.

The small but beastly SLK55 AMG comes with an explosive V8 engine mated to the seven-speed automatic.

Use of high-strength steel ensures maximum structural rigidity, which translates into a stable ride without the shakes and rattles that tend to plague many convertibles. A four-wheel independent suspension in the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class affords crisp handling with decent compliance over bumps and potholes.

The SLK55 AMG includes a lowered, stiffened sport suspension with wheel, tire and brake upgrades. The latter can be purchased as an AMG Sport Package on the SLK280 and SLK350. Four-wheel disc antilock brakes with brake assist, Electronic Slip Control and Electronic Stability Program are standard on all models.

Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class Vehicle Summary

The car’s interior is elegant, with a dashboard that flows into the door panels and an instrument panel with large, chronograph-style gauges. As with all Mercedes-Benzes, there are many buttons and knobs that can seem overwhelming at first.

The Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class is well equipped in all versions. Side and knee-level airbags are standard. The AMG model includes more-supportive sport seats. Convertible lovers who enjoy top-down motoring in the fall will appreciate the optional "Airscarf" feature, which incorporates neck-level vents in the seats that blow hot air.

Is the Mercedes-Benz SLK-Class for You?
Buy the SLK-Class if
You're a convertible lover; you're looking for a sporty, two-seat coupe and would appreciate the ability to drop the top; two seats are enough; you're considering the Porsche Boxster and would like the option of a V8 engine and the convenience of a folding hardtop; you're a techie who relishes the latest gizmos and gadgets.

Keep Looking if
Two seats don't cut it; you hate bad hair days and always drive with the windows up and the A/C on, in which case convertibles aren't for you; you value simple, streamlined interior controls.

Who Fits?
The SLK-Class' cabin is compact, as expected, so larger drivers should take a spin with the top both up and down to make sure it's comfortable over the long haul; getting in and out can be tricky with the top up.
