There are minor updates since a redesigned Avalon went on sale in spring 2005. Tweaks include a standard tire-pressure monitoring system, and some reshuffling of options among the four trim and equipment levels: the standard XL, the sportier Touring, the extremely well-equipped XLS and the top-of-the-line Limited.
The Touring model now offers a satellite navigation system that was previously restricted to the XLS and Limited.
The Toyota Avalon comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, capable of strong launches and highway passing, and Toyota’s most powerful V6 to date. The V6 drives the front wheels via a smooth-shifting, five-speed automatic transmission that also allows the driver to shift gears manually.
The Toyota Camry-based Avalon is built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Ky. It appeals to import shoppers who don’t want a rougher-riding sport sedan, as well as to domestic intenders looking for a more reliable alternative to big sedans from Ford, Oldsmobile and Chrysler.
The Toyota Avalon offers a fairly supple and quiet ride. The Touring version features a firmer suspension, which improves handling at the expense of some ride comfort. Advanced safety and chassis control systems include side-curtain airbags, a driver’s-knee airbag and antilock brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution. Stability and traction control with brake assist are optional.
The cabin is spacious and comfortable. Depending on the version, the Avalon runs from being merely nicely featured to fully loaded. The top-of-the-line Limited model, for example, comes with items like heated and ventilated front seats; an adjustable-length seat cushion for the driver; and a Smart Key system that allows entry, starting and other functions without inserting the key in the lock or the ignition, as long as the key fob is handy, in the ashtray, for instance, or in the motorist’s pocket, purse or briefcase.
