Nearly all of the Hybrid Synergy Drive hardware is configured in places where it doesn’t impact passenger space, and it only slightly impacts cargo space. The hybrid-system battery is in the space just behind the backseat, while most of the other hybrid components have been fitted under the hood.

Those who’ve driven Toyota’s Prius won’t feel nearly as geeked-out with the Camry Hybrid’s rather conventional instrument-panel layout. There’s a small multifunction trip computer that displays gas-mileage data — as well as a diagram of how power is flowing to or from the electric motor, battery, regenerative brakes and gasoline engine. But otherwise, a straightforward analog gauge in the instrument panel helps you drive in the most economical way. It’s a very useful addition, as the most economical way to drive a hybrid isn’t so intuitive; it’s also less distracting than the rather complicated fuel-economy screen that the Prius uses.

The Hybrid model is loaded with the conveniences that you would ordinarily find on a more expensive luxury car, including features like dual-zone climate control, heated outside mirrors, a Smart Entry system that automatically unlocks the doors and triggers the ignition, as well as steering wheel controls for some climate and audio functions. There’s also a powerful 440-watt, eight-speaker JBL MP3-compatible audio system with four-CD changer and integrated Bluetooth telephony — so you can use your cell phone hands-free through the audio system. Options include a power moonroof, heated seats, leather-trimmed interior and a navigation system.
On the safety front, standard features include a tire-pressure monitoring system, front seats designed to reduce whiplash in collisions, plus a full array of airbags, including front airbags, front-seat-mounted side airbags, front and rear side-curtain airbags and a knee-bolster airbag for the driver.
