Power to the People(-Mover)

The people-moving Toyota Sienna minivan has a more-powerful standard engine, but sporty itÂ?s not.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The Toyota Sienna minivan has suffered from lackluster engine power, but Toyota has moved to correct that, with a larger V6 engine that is also shared with the Camry sedan, the Lexus ES 350 and the Lexus RX 350. The bigger V6 engine is mated to a smooth-shifting, five-speed automatic transmission that adapts its shift patterns according to a motorist’s driving style.

The Toyota Sienna is offered in four trim levels: CE, LE, XLE and Limited. All versions but the base CE model can be fitted with a sophisticated, all-wheel-drive system for added traction and security in foul weather. Models equipped with AWD come with run-flat tires. Vehicle Stability Control, which reduces the chances that the vehicle will spin out of control on slippery roads or during extreme handling maneuvers, is standard on the Limited and AWD versions and optional on the others. Antilock power brakes with electronic brakeforce distribution and brake assist come standard on all models.

Available with either seven- or eight-passenger seating, the Toyota Sienna offers a comfortable, attractive and functional interior. A standard 60/40-split third-row bench seat folds flat into the floor — one or both segments at a time. Front-seat-mounted side airbags and side-curtain airbags for all three rows of seats are standard across the line. All audio systems are compatible with MP3-encoded CDs and come with mini-jack ports for connecting iPods and other portable audio gear.

Toyota Sienna Vehicle Summary

A host of advanced features are available, some of which are usually seen only on high-end luxury cars. These include a rearview video camera and front/rear parking proximity warnings, laser-guided adaptive cruise control, a satellite navigation system and surround-sound audio.

The Toyota Sienna’s price can quickly run well into the luxury-car range if you pile on the bells and whistles, especially since many options are offered only in costly packages.

Is the Toyota Sienna for You?
Buy the Sienna if
You want a stylish, safe and sophisticated minivan that offers the latest high-tech features and safety systems; you need space to carry up to seven or eight; you have a small business, which requires frequent hauling of materials or clients; you’re considering a truck-based SUV but don’t intend to go off-road and would prefer a versatile vehicle that rides more like a car.

Keep Looking if
Your ego can’t withstand the perceived (and we think unfair) “soccer mom” stigma associated with minivans; you need to tow or haul heavy loads, in which case a truck-based SUV might work better; extra space and versatility are nice, but you’d prefer something smaller and more fuel-efficient, in which case a midsize sedan, wagon or compact SUV might be a better choice.

Who Fits?
As many as eight occupants can fit in the Toyota Sienna's spacious interior. However, the seven-passenger configuration, which has separate captain’s chairs in the middle row, can help separate kids engaged in “he/she’s bugging me”-type arguments. As with most vehicles of this type, only children and smaller, more-limber adults will be comfortable accessing and/or sitting in the third row.
