2008 Acura TSX Model Overview

2008 Acura TSX

Good Sport

The Acura TSX is a dynamic if less powerful alternative to mainstream midsize luxury sedans from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The front-wheel-drive Acura TSX, based on the Honda Accord sold in Europe, is sportier than the U.S. Accord, not to mention its big brother, the larger and pricier Acura TL.

The TSX is outgunned by V6 variants of its (more expensive) competitors, such as the Audi A4 3.2, BMW 325i, and Mercedes-Benz C280, but is still a satisfying ride.

The TSX’s 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine generates decent power at just over 200 horsepower, but it must be revved high to get there. Getting a six-cylinder engine means upgrading to the Acura TL that is based on the larger U.S.-specification Accord, and spending an additional $5,000.

As befits a sport sedan, the manual transmission in the Acura TSX comes standard. This six-speed transmission works superbly, as every Honda manual transmission does. It is recommended for enthusiasts looking to optimize engine performance. A five-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift capability is optional.

The firm suspension provides lively handling, but sacrifices comfort over bumps and potholes. With a front-weight bias thanks to the front-wheel-drive layout, the Acura TSX doesn’t feel as balanced as rear-drive sedans from BMW, Lexus, and Mercedes-Benz, but it’s still fun to drive.

Antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control systems, and front side and side-curtain airbags are standard.

Acura TSX Vehicle Summary

The Acura TSX has a high level of standard equipment. That can help it win a price comparison versus European competitors, which tend to charge extra for just about everything, including equipment luxury buyers have come to take for granted, like sunroofs. Standard features for the Acura TSX include a Bluetooth hands-free interface for cell phones; power moonroof; high-discharge Xenon headlamps; and leather upholstery. Some of the latest high-tech gadget features, like adaptive headlamps, are missing, however. Aside from the automatic transmission, the only factory option is a voice-activated navigation system.

The interior of the Acura TSX is high quality and functional, but the rear seat can be tight.

The next redesign for the Acura TSX is expected for the 2009 model year. It is rumored to include a turbocharged engine and an all-wheel-drive version.
