The Audi A4 Sedan is a smooth-riding luxury sedan with performance characteristics enhanced by its highly competent all-wheel-drive system. It excels at highway cruising, and inspires confidence when driving in foul weather.

The base model is the Audi A4 2.0T, powered by a small-but-powerful 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine. Front-wheel-drive versions come with a six-speed manual transmission or a continuously variable transmission (CVT), which Audi calls “Multitronic.”

A CVT uses belts and pulleys instead of gears to transmit power from the engine to the drive shafts. Like a conventional automatic transmission, there is no need to manually shift gears. The CVT is designed to improve torque at low engine speeds, and to save weight and improve fuel consumption.

With Audi’s famous quattro all-wheel drive, the Audi A4 2.0T gets either the six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission, the latter which lets the driver shift gears manually.

The Audi A4 3.2 variant comes with a 3.2-liter V6 engine shared with the larger Audi A6 model. The V6 generates more than 25 percent additional power than the 2.0-liter turbo. With the V6 engine, front-wheel-drive models get the CVT. Quattro models get the manual transmission or the automatic.

Audi A4 Sedan Vehicle Summary

An optional S Line Sport Package includes upgraded suspension components and performance-oriented tires — well short of S4 or RS 4 performance, but the package sharpens handling, particularly when teamed with all-wheel drive.

Four-wheel antilock disc brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and the latest version of Audi’s stability and traction control systems are standard on all models and work to help Audi A4 Sedan drivers retain control under slippery conditions or during extreme maneuvers.

Adaptive high-intensity headlamps that pivot to help illuminate the road around curves are part of an options package for the less-expensive models, as well as a navigation system with Audi’s Multi-Media Interface (MMI). The Audi A4’s MMI system can be difficult to operate, but less so than BMW’s iDrive system. Audi does a particularly nice job of keeping radio channels organized with the optional satellite radio receiver.

Is the Audi A4 Sedan for You?
Buy the A4 Sedan if
You want a comfortable, stylish and solid-performing sporty sedan that doesn’t ride as harsh as some of the competition; you want all-wheel drive; you need a luxury compact car that can comfortably carry kids in the back on a long trip or can squeeze in several adults on short jaunts.

Keep Looking if
You need comfortable seating for five large adults; you prefer a car that skews either toward luxury or performance rather than blending the two; you prefer flashy styling.

Who Fits?
Four fit comfortably and five in a pinch; front-seat occupants will find ample room; the rear seat will accommodate most passengers.
