2008 Cadillac STS

2008 Cadillac STS Model Overview

2008 Cadillac STS

Local Hero

The midsize Cadillac STS is a viable domestic alternative to import luxury sport sedans, with the top STS-V model being an especially capable performer.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
Even in its base form, the Cadillac STS feels sporty for a luxury sedan. Though some might find it bland or uninspiring, we think it is a handsome and capable alternative to popular BMW and Mercedes-Benz models.

Like some of its competition, the rear-wheel-drive STS is also available with all-wheel drive and can be had in a rare, high-performance version called the STS-V.

Besides failing to blow away the competition in any one category, as well as getting lost between the less expensive Cadillac CTS and pricier DTS, one of this car's main drawbacks is the fact that the interior feels cramped for a vehicle of this size. The rear seat in particular is surprisingly confined for a midsize luxury sedan.

On the other hand, the STS's fit and finish are exacting, especially compared with older Cadillacs. The interior uses high-quality materials and the controls are well laid out.

The standard engine is a V6 (shared with the Cadillac CTS) that is paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. A Northstar V8 is optional and offers the usual trade-off in fuel economy for more power and better acceleration. The V8 is mated to a six-speed automatic that includes a manual shift mode.

Meanwhile, the Cadillac STS-V is fitted with a hand-assembled, supercharged version of the V8 that puts out more than 450 horsepower. The STS-V is visually distinguished by a larger, polished stainless-steel wire mesh front grille, unique front and rear fascias, a unique hood design and handcrafted cabin treatment.

The STS offers a smooth and stable ride. A Magnetic Selective Ride Control system is available with the V8 engine. This ingenious system makes the suspension stiffer or more compliant depending on road conditions and driving style by using magnetic currents that act on shock absorbers filled with fluid that is infused with metallic particles. And upgraded steering system for more precise handling is also available, but like Magnetic Ride Control, it’s only offered as part of a costly options package.

Cadillac STS Vehicle Summary

The Cadillac STS-V includes stiffer stabilizer bars and suspension springs, a quicker steering ratio, high-performance brakes, and a performance-tuned chassis, all of which increase the car’s cornering abilities without creating an unduly harsh ride.

Standard features are plentiful; the V8 version offers adaptive, laser-guided cruise control than can maintain a set distance from the traffic ahead. Other high-tech features like a keyless-entry/remote-starter function and a four-color head-up display, are only available as part of pricey options packages.

Did You Know...
The STS debuted for the 2005 model year as a sportier successor to the larger, front-drive Seville. The STS is based on Cadillac's so-called Sigma platform that also underpins the smaller CTS. Cadillac added the high-performance STS-V version for 2006.
