2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe Model Overview

2008 Chevrolet Tahoe

Refined Ruffian

Gas-guzzling tendencies aside, the Chevrolet Tahoe is a capable and comfortable full-size SUV with plenty of utility.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com

The Tahoe is Chevrolet's second-largest SUV, next to the Suburban. It is sold in three trim levels — LS, LT, and LTZ — in both rear- and four-wheel-drive versions. Despite its bruiser image, it is packed with luxury features like head-curtain airbags, power-release fold-and-tumble second-row seating, a remote starter, heated front and second-row seats, rear proximity warnings, a rearview camera, and power-deploying running boards.

The Tahoe's handsome, conservative exterior is unashamedly big and boxy, though slightly more aerodynamic looking than the previous generation's. It features a body-colored horizontal grille, jewel-like headlamps and fog lights, and a wraparound fascia. A Z71 off-road package adds aggressive styling touches with larger 18-inch wheels and tires. Optional rims and rubber as large as 20 inches in diameter are also available.

The Chevrolet Tahoe rides on a chassis with a fully boxed frame that's stiffer than the previous model's and reduces noise, vibration, and harshness. Overall, it has a far more refined feel inside. A wider stance and lower center of gravity provide greater stability, and a revised suspension improves the ride and handling.

Chevrolet Tahoe Vehicle Summary

The previous generation's 320-horsepower 5.3-liter V8 engine carries over, but now offers increased fuel economy thanks to GM's Displacement on Demand technology, in which half of the engine's cylinders are deactivated in driving situations where full engine output is not required. Chevy says this powerplant will get an estimated 20.5 miles per gallon on average in a combination of city and highway driving, which is on par with estimates for the midsize Hummer H3.

A base 4.8-liter V8 is the standard engine for two-wheel drive models. Unfortunately, the Chevrolet Tahoe continues with its familiar four-speed automatic transmission, even as the competition offers more sophisticated and smoother five-speed gearboxes.

Poseurs aside, the core buyers of large and powerful SUVs such as the Tahoe frequently pull boats, campers, and the like. As a result, the Tahoe doesn't skimp in the towing department, with a maximum rating of 7,700 pounds when equipped with four-wheel drive.

The interior includes a two-tone instrument panel with LED-backlit instrumentation, chrome trim, and a high center stack for the climate control, audio, and optional navigation systems. A split-folding third-row seat is optional for seven-passenger capability. Unlike other SUVs, the third-row doesn't fold into the floor and must be removed for optimum cargo capacity.

As before, the Chevrolet Tahoe shares platforms, powertrains, and select components with other GM vehicles, including its GMC twin, the Yukon. A hybrid-powered version is also available, and reviewed separately.
