2008 Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster Review

A Bigger Bite

The low-slung Dodge Viper Roadster sinks its fangs into the competition with a 600-horsepower V10 engine.

The current-generation Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster debuted as a 2003 model with welcome improvements in ride and handling, fit and finish, added power, fresh styling, and many more standard amenities, including a proper folding convertible top. A refresh for 2008 added assorted performance upgrades, the most significant of which is a considerably stronger version of its potent V10 powerplant.

The Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster debuted in 1992. It was much cruder and less expensive than the current model, and it's credited with helping to revive the then-ailing Chrysler.

The Viper's 8.4-liter aluminum engine uses technology like variable valve timing to generate an incredible 600 horsepower, which is sufficient to launch the Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster to 60 mph in less than four seconds. This places it among the costliest exotic sports cars in terms of competition.

Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster Vehicle Summary

The only available transmission is a Tremec-supplied six-speed manual that’s specially engineered to handle all that power. An external transmission-oil cooler is optional for those who push their Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadsters to the limit, such as on a racetrack.

A robust speed-sensing limited-slip differential teams with a racecar-like suspension system to keep the Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster planted through curves. The car's ride quality continues to be on the harsh side. A heavy-duty antilock disc braking system features oversized Brembo calipers and enables the car to reach a dead stop from 60 mph in just 100 feet.

Potential buyers should be aware that driving a Viper can be a little like trying to tame a wild beast. In a car of such power and speed, the limits of adhesion — that is, when the tires lose their grip — can come on quickly in turns and overwhelm inexperienced drivers who might not be familiar with the idiosyncrasies of 600 horses being channeled through the 19-inch rear wheels’ comparably small contact patches (where the rubber meets the road).

The Dodge Viper SRT10 Roadster remains one of the most aggressively cast cars on the road. While it maintains its iconic low-slung muscular look, cosmetic changes during its most recent refresh include a larger air scoop and six functional air extractors cut into its long and sloping hood to help dissipate the heat generated by the added power.

A spartan cockpit includes a no-nonsense instrument panel with push-button starter and supportive sport seats. A choice of bezel finishes on the gauges and console affords buyers an element of interior customization. However, those looking for a long list of fanciful high-tech gadget features should look elsewhere.

A fixed-roof version of the Dodge Viper SRT10 is also available.
