2008 Infiniti M

2008 Infiniti M Model Overview

2008 Infiniti M Review

Sure-Footed Sports Sedan

As part of a mid-cycle update, the Infiniti M45 gets an available all-wheel-drive system to help put its V8 power to the road.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
A redesigned Infiniti M45 was launched for the 2006 model year to impressive reviews. With the demise of the former Q45, it sits atop the line as the company’s flagship model. It offers clean and uncluttered exterior styling, a well-designed interior, and exceptional all-around performance. The rear-drive Infiniti M45 received a mid-cycle refresh for 2008 that included modest styling updates inside and out, a few added features, and an M45x all-wheel-drive model. The car shares its underpinnings with the smaller Infiniti G35 Sedan. A V6-powered version is available as the Infiniti M35. Infiniti markets all versions in the line as the “M.”

A 4.5-liter V8 engine delivers spirited acceleration. It drives the rear wheels exclusively via a five-speed automatic transmission that affords manual gear selection.

A double-wishbone front suspension with a multilink array at the rear delivers crisp handing without a harsh ride. The M45x version comes with an optional “intelligent” all-wheel-drive system that provides added grip on both wet and dry roads. An optional Sport package includes larger wheels and tires, assorted cosmetic upgrades, and a rear active steering system that turns the back wheels slightly during hard cornering. Most owners will probably be happy with the standard non-active setup, not to mention save themselves potentially higher maintenance costs from repairing this complex feature down the road. The Infiniti M45 comes standard with an electronic stability control system known as Vehicle Dynamic Control.

Infiniti M45 Vehicle Summary

The Infiniti M45 has a comfortable, leather-clad interior. Standard comfort and convenience items include a keyless Intelligent Key system with push-button ignition, voice recognition for various systems, a power sunroof, and a rearview camera for easier parallel parking. Front side and side-curtain airbags are standard.

The Infiniti M45 is available with some of the latest high-tech features, including laser-guided cruise control, a hard-drive digital entertainment storage system, touch-screen navigation system with an available traffic-alert function, and Preview Braking, which pre-pressurizes the brake lines in anticipation of a panic stop if the system detects that a car ahead is slowing suddenly, or if the driver’s foot is abruptly removed from the accelerator pedal. An available Lane Departure Prevention system not only gives the driver visual and audible warnings if the car inadvertently crosses highway lane markers, it engages the Infiniti M45’s Vehicle Dynamic Control system to help get the vehicle back on track.

The downside to all these extras is the plethora of buttons inside the Infiniti M45. To be fair, many of the buttons are well-chosen, in the sense that they represent frequently used functions. But there are just too many of them. For instance, there is one button to zoom in the navigation display, and another button to zoom out. Having dedicated buttons means not having to search through computer-based menus, like in BMW's iDrive, but the M45 controls still require a lot of use and/or reading to get familiar with all of them.
