Although a slow seller, the Jaguar X-Type is an elegant alternative to more modern premium sport sedans from Audi, BMW, and Volvo. Jaguar has announced that 2008 will be the final year for the X-Type model line. This lame-duck status could create opportunities for consumers looking to save some money at the dealership.

The Jaguar X-Type is a pleasant drive and gets a respectable level of standard equipment, including dynamic stability control, a moonroof, and split-folding rear seat.

The X-Type 3.0 sedan has a 3.0-liter V6 and a five-speed automatic transmission. The engine is shared with the midsize Jaguar S-Type.

Standard all-wheel drive enhances traction in foul weather. It sends 60 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels in normal driving conditions and varies the power split between the front and rear wheels as needed.

Handling is nimble and entertaining, thanks to four-wheel independent suspension. The ride is a bit softer than some competing premium sedans. Acceleration is competitive but requires a heavy right foot. The engine must be revved hard for serious thrust.

Four-wheel disc antilock brakes and traction control are standard, and the Jaguar X-Type 3.0 sedan benefits from the aforementioned dynamic stability control; it includes emergency brake assist, which optimizes braking and traction control systems for better grip.

Jaguar X-Type Sedan Vehicle Summary

Like the exterior, the interior design of the X-Type 3.0 sedan is reminiscent of Jaguar's top model, the XJ, though the backseat area is cramped. An available navigation system adds a touch screen that controls the stereo and ventilation systems.

In the past, Jaguar has tried different strategies to reverse a deep sales slide for the X-Type. It lowered pricing, dropped the previously standard 2.5-liter V6 engine, repackaged features and options, and introduced a Sportwagon version for 2005 — none of which seems to have helped.
