2008 Jaguar X-Type Wagon Model Overview

2008 Jaguar X-Type Wagon

Lame-Duck Wagon

The compact Jaguar X-Type Sportwagon receives some added features for what will be its final model year.

Although a slow seller, the Jaguar X-Type Wagon is an elegant and classic-looking alternative to more modern-looking premium sport wagons from the likes of Audi, BMW, and Volvo.

Jaguar has already announced that 2008 will be the final year for the X-Type model line. The lame-duck status of the X-Type could create some opportunities for consumers who are willing to wait for Jaguar to clear out its remaining inventory by cutting prices with incentives and/or additional standard equipment.

The Jaguar X-Type Wagon is a pleasant drive and gets a respectable level of standard equipment, including dynamic stability control, a moonroof, and a split-folding rear seat.

It shares the same 3.0-liter V6 as the X-Type 3.0 sedan and the midsize Jaguar S-Type.

Standard all-wheel drive enhances traction in foul weather. It sends 60 percent of the engine's power to the rear wheels in normal driving conditions and varies the power split between the front and rear wheels as needed.

Handling is nimble and fairly entertaining, thanks to four-wheel independent suspension. The ride is a bit softer than some competing premium wagons. Acceleration is competitive but requires a heavy right foot. The engine must be revved hard for serious thrust. Four-wheel disc antilock brakes and traction control are standard, and the Jaguar X-Type Wagon benefits from the aforementioned dynamic stability control; it includes emergency brake assist, which optimizes braking and traction-control systems for better grip.

Jaguar X-Type Wagon Vehicle Summary

Like the exterior (from the front, at least), the interior design of the X-Type Wagon is reminiscent of Jaguar's top model, the XJ. The back seat area is cramped. Like competing models, there is not a whole lot of cargo room with the back seats up. With the rear seats folded down, it can hold a surprising amount of stuff. The wagon version also offers more rear headroom than the sedan, in addition to cargo capacity. An available navigation system adds a touch screen that controls the stereo and ventilation systems.

Did You Know?
Based on the Mondeo from Ford of Europe, which also failed to captivate Americans when it was sold in the U.S. as the Ford Contour during the '90s, the X-Type never turned out to be the 3 Series-fighter Jaguar had hoped for. It is unable to muster the performance and handling to keep pace with top competitors and is plagued with a reputation for poor reliability.
