2008 Lexus LS 460

2008 Lexus LS 460 Model Overview

2008 Lexus LS 460

High-Tech Flagship

The Lexus LS 460 is a technological and luxurious tour de force as groundbreaking as the first LS that launched in 1990.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The Lexus LS 460 is the Japanese automaker's most technologically advanced model. It is a full-size, rear-wheel-drive sedan that is also available in a long-wheelbase version. The LS 460 is strong competition for similar models from Audi, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

The LS 460's interior is surprisingly confining for such a large car, particularly with regard to headroom.

The car feels sumptuous and expensive from behind the wheel. It's geared heavily toward a quite, serene ride that isolates occupants from the road and the elements.

The Lexus LS 460 comes powered by a 4.6-liter V8 engine that generates 380 horsepower, an increase of 90 hp over the model it replaces. It also has an industry-first eight-speed automatic transmission.

The ride and handling characteristics of the LS 460 benefit from a recently redesigned suspension and improved version of the automaker’s Vehicle Dynamics Integrated Management, which manages its chassis control systems for greater security in extreme situations. An air-suspension system is optional on the LS 460 L and further enhances ride comfort and handling.

The current model’s exterior styling is more dramatic than the previous generation’s. Lexus calls its latest design theme “L-finesse,” which debuted with Lexus GS sedans. Inside, the Lexus LS 460 has a richly trimmed, leather-clad interior.

A $12,645 Executive Class Seating package available on the LS 460 L replaces the rear, center seat with a wood-trimmed console that houses various controls for temperature and audio settings. It also offers a reclining right rear seat that comes with a footrest and multifunction massage device.

Lexus LS 460 Vehicle Summary

Standard equipment includes a wealth of safety, comfort, and convenience features. A voice-operated navigation system incorporates Bluetooth wireless technology. It also provides real-time traffic updates for major cities and can recalculate routes to avoid congestion. The system also stores map information on a built-in hard drive. A rear-seat DVD system comes with a large fold-down screen, while the audiophile-quality Mark Levinson surround-sound system comes with 19 speakers and generates 450 watts of power.

The most-talked-about high-tech feature on the new LS is the Intelligent Park Assist system. It can parallel park the car itself. The system was previously offered in Japan on the Toyota Prius hybrid. When a motorist finds a parking space and activates the system, exterior-mounted video cameras guide the car’s steering to maneuver the car into place. All the driver needs to do is modulate the brake pedal.

The system is not infallible, and some owners may not like the idea in the first place, but it does have a certain “gee-whiz” factor.

Did You Know?
The original Lexus, the big and opulent LS sedan, is the vehicle Toyota’s upscale division was built around when it launched for the 1990 model year. It was the most expensive Japanese car to date and, along with its rival the Infiniti Q45, the first to come powered by a V8 engine. Even though Honda’s Acura division had by then already proven that an Asian automaker could sell premium vehicles, some doubt existed as to how far upscale the market could reach for Japanese brands. The LS paved the way for many successful additions to the Lexus line, including luxury sport sedans and coupes, SUVs, and hybrid vehicles.
