The Lexus SC 430 is a hardtop convertible that puts comfort far above performance.

The Lexus SC 430 roadster may not be the best-selling model in the Lexus line, but it probably draws the most attention in traffic or parked on the street, thanks to its curvaceous styling and power-retractable hardtop. While it certainly looks the part, it still doesn’t handle like a true sports car. It’s more of a grand touring luxury car than a Porsche-fighter.

Recent changes include knee-height airbags for the driver and front passenger, along with an occupant-detection system for the front-passenger seat that prevents the airbag from deploying when the seat is vacant or occupied by a small child.

In addition to the base version, a limited-production Pebble Beach Edition is also offered. This edition comes painted in a Starfire Pearl finish, with a Pimento Red, leather-trimmed interior, upgraded wheels, and unique logos. Lexus says only 400 will be produced.

The rear-wheel-drive SC 430 has a 4.3-liter V8 engine. It’s mated to a six-speed automatic transmission that can be shifted manually.

The standard Vehicle Skid Control helps keep the car from losing grip. It can be switched off with the idea of allowing more-aggressive handling, but the lethargic chassis won’t be hustled through turns. The SC 430 is stylish and capable, but it’s better at boulevard cruising than fast jaunts on twisty back roads.

The cabin is attractively trimmed and well appointed. A premium Mark Levinson stereo and satellite navigation are standard. So are adaptive headlights, where the beam of light automatically pivots to help illuminate the road around curves at night. There are few options, including a rear spoiler and run-flat tires. Run-flat tires allow a driver with a flat to keep going at reduced speeds to reach a safe spot to pull off the highway, or potentially to reach a repair shop.

A virtually unusable backseat is one of the car’s few flaws. Think of it as an exquisitely upholstered cargo shelf. You may need it, because of the small trunk.
