Running With the Big Boys

The full-size Toyota Avalon continues to beat the traditional, large domestic sedans at their own game, with added comfort, performance, and reliability.

The Toyota Avalon is the brand’s largest sedan, named for an island paradise from Celtic mythology, an allusion that is intended to convey images of comfort, spaciousness, and sophistication.

The Toyota Avalon comes with a 3.5-liter V6 engine, capable of strong launches and highway passing, and Toyota’s most powerful V6 to date. The engine drives the front wheels via a smooth-shifting, five-speed automatic transmission that also allows the driver to shift gears manually.

The Avalon is based on the Toyota Camry and built at Toyota’s manufacturing facility in Georgetown, Ky. It appeals to import shoppers who don’t want a rougher-riding sport sedan, as well as to domestic shoppers looking for a more reliable alternative to big sedans from Ford and Chrysler.

The Toyota Avalon offers a supple and quiet ride. The Touring version features a firmer suspension, which improves handling at the expense of ride comfort. Advanced safety and chassis control systems include side-curtain airbags, a driver’s-knee airbag, and antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution. Stability and traction control with brake assist are optional.

Toyota Avalon Vehicle Summary

The cabin is spacious and comfortable. Depending on the version, the Avalon runs from being merely nicely featured to sumptuous. The top-of-the-line Limited model, for example, comes with items like heated and ventilated front seats; an adjustable-length seat cushion for the driver; and a Smart Key system that allows entry, starting, and other functions without inserting the key in the lock or the ignition, as long as the key fob is nearby.
