2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser

2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser Model Overview

2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser

A Bolder Off-Roader

The retro-designed Toyota FJ Cruiser is off-road capable, practical, and affordable.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
The uniquely styled Toyota FJ Cruiser is a “back to basics” SUV inspired by the automaker’s classic FJ40 model from the 1960s. It shares its chassis and key components with the costlier Toyota 4Runner and the even-more-costly Lexus GX, but no one would mistake the FJ Cruiser for any other contemporary vehicle.

The FJ Cruiser goes head-to-head with the Nissan Xterra at the lower end of the truck-based SUV market. It was conceived to appeal to younger and more-active buyers who want distinctive styling and an affordable sticker price, and who are willing to forgo creature comforts and a higher degree of product sophistication.

The FJ Cruiser stands out in a crowded field of look-alike family wagons. It has round headlamps and a tall and upright profile with broad-shouldered fenders. Rugged touches include a triple-wiper configuration on the windshield, rear-hinged back doors and an exposed spare tire. All models come painted in a choice of primary colors and a white roof. In contrast to the garish exterior, the cabin is no-nonsense, with a straightforward instrument panel that sports black-on-white gauges, minimal gadgetry, and water-repellent cloth seats. The rear seat can fold to create a nearly flat cargo floor.

The Toyota FJ Cruiser comes adequately powered by a V6 engine paired with a five-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual is offered on four-wheel-drive models. The automatic includes what Toyota calls Artificial Intelligence Shift Control, which adapts shift patterns according to road conditions and the motorist’s driving style.

The available four-wheel-drive system includes a two-speed transfer case with low-range gearing, which it shares with the 4Runner. That spells surefooted off-road prowess. The four-wheel-drive system normally supplies a 40/60 front-to-rear power split, varying the amount of engine torque sent to either axle, based on wheel slippage and steering angle. It can also be locked into a 50/50 split. The vehicle’s ride and handling characteristics are acceptable, but they remain truck-like. Those looking for more sophisticated on-road manners should buy a car-based crossover model, like the Toyota Highlander or RAV4. On the plus side, the FJ Cruiser can tow up to 5,000 pounds with either rear-wheel drive or four-wheel drive.

Toyota FJ Cruiser Vehicle Summary

Though the Toyota FJ Cruiser comes at a relatively low price, it includes a wealth of advanced chassis control systems. These include Vehicle Stability Control, traction control, and antilock brakes with electronic brake-force distribution and brake assist. Rear-wheel-drive models add a limited-slip differential for more traction. Side-curtain airbags that cover both rows of seats are optional.

A noteworthy option is a premium, 400-watt “FJammer” audio system that can connect with portable devices such as MP3 players. However, it’s only offered as part of an expensive package of options. Buyers can customize their FJ Cruisers with an assortment of accessories that range from a sport exhaust system to auxiliary driving lights.

Did You Know?
Toyota’s original FJ40, from which the current FJ Cruiser receives its design inspiration, debuted in 1960. Available with two doors and a choice of either a hardtop or a soft-top, the vehicle’s first generation ran through 1967 and was styled after the original Jeep CJ, which is now the Wrangler. The FJ40’s modern-day derivative is the much larger and more sophisticated Land Cruiser.
