From the front, this full-size vehicle resembles a low-slung SUV or beefy station wagon, with Ford’s now-signature chrome horizontal three-bar grille. The side view betrays some hearse-like elements, thanks to an elongated profile, but the available contrasting roof shows some life in the styling department. Grooved door panels also contribute a bit of flair.
Like many crossovers, the Flex’s interior houses three rows of seats. But the cabin makes a strong statement with features like a refrigerated console, second-row footrests, a rear-seat entertainment system, a multi-section skylight/sunroof and LED mood lighting.
The Flex is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine, which is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It delivers 262 horsepower and 245 pound-feet of torque, with a 4,000-pound towing capacity. The Flex comes with front-wheel drive as standard equipment and the option of all-wheel drive.
Gas mileage is decent for a car of this size: the front-wheel-drive model gets 17 miles per gallon in the city and 24 mpg on the highway, while the all-wheel-drive version achieves 16 mpg around town and 22 mpg on the highway.
Safety features include a high-strength steel body structure, rear back-up camera, stability control, driver and front passenger airbags, as well as Ford’s Safety Canopy side-curtain airbag system for all three rows.
The Flex is on sale now with a base price just under $30,000.
