2009 Jaguar XF

2009 Jaguar XF Model Overview

2009 Jaguar XF Review

Running in a New Direction

The Jaguar XF is a sporty midsize luxury sedan that's hoped to bring new vitality to the automaker's stodgy image.

by Jim Gorzelany, ForbesAutos.com
Introduced in the spring of 2008 as an early 2009 model, the midsize Jaguar XF sedan replaced the aging S-Type in the storied British automaker’s lineup as a more powerful and passionate model. Following in the footsteps of the XK coupe and convertible, it sets a new styling direction for Jaguar in an effort to attract younger buyers than the S-Type could muster.

The Jaguar XF comes wrapped in strong-shouldered coupe-like styling. It borrows aesthetic cues from the XK, including its mammoth oval grille and side air vents on the front fenders.

The rear-wheel-drive Jaguar XF offers a choice of two potent V8 engines, both which see duty in the XJ and XK models. The 4.2-liter engine in the Luxury and Premium Luxury versions delivers 300 horsepower, while the top Supercharged model ups the ante considerably with its 420-hp supercharged V8 and a 0-to-60 mph time just over five seconds. A six-speed automatic transmission can adapt to match motorists' driving styles, and includes shift paddles on the steering wheel.

A rigid chassis, wide stance, and sophisticated suspension system promise athletic vehicle dynamics with a comfortable ride. The Supercharged model adds Jaguar’s electronically controlled Computer Adaptive Technology Suspension (CATS) that automatically responds to road conditions and driver input. A long list of advanced chassis control systems are standard for added handling security over a wide range of conditions. Understeer Control Logic automatically reduces the throttle to keep the car from spinning out in the curves.

The five-passenger Jaguar XF’s opulent interior is trimmed in wood and aluminum, with distinctive instrumentation, soothing ambient lighting, and a few tricks up its leather sleeves. Upon entering the vehicle, the backlit start button pulsates like a heartbeat. Push the button and the dashboard air vents automatically rotate open while the JaguarDrive Selector (used to select various performance modes, depending on the model) rises to hand from the center console.

The Jaguar XF includes a full complement of safety features, including six airbags and anti-whiplash headrests on the front seats. An optional blind spot monitor is designed to make lane changing safer. The available Adaptive Cruise Control helps maintain a set speed and distance from traffic ahead, and includes a feature that pre-pressurizes the brakes in anticipation of a panic stop.

Jaguar XF Vehicle Summary
