The Ford Escape Hybrid combines a 2.3-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor, generator and rechargeable battery pack. The combination produces the equivalent of 155 hp, which represents acceleration equivalent to a V6 gasoline-powered model, but with a fuel-economy rating that beats the four-cylinder gasoline version. The Ford Escape's counterparts in the Ford brand family are the Mercury Mariner Hybrid and the Mazda Tribute Hybrid. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is standard. Using belts and pulleys in lieu of traditional, fixed gears, it provides smooth acceleration. All-wheel drive is optional. The Ford Escape Hybrid was the first hybrid SUV when it was introduced for the 2005 model year.
The Ford Escape Hybrid reigns as the fuel-economy leader among SUVs.
