The Jeep Commander, based on the Grand Cherokee, is the company's first seven-passenger SUV. The Commander debuted for the 2006 model year. It has sharp-edged lines, an upright windshield and a bold front grille, paying styling homage to classic Jeeps. Like the Grand Cherokee, there are three available engines: A 3.7-liter V6 is standard on the base model. Upgrades are either a 4.7-liter V8 engine, or a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that boasts well over 300 hp and a "displacement on demand" function to help boost fuel economy. A five-speed automatic transmission is included across the line. Three full-time four-wheel-drive systems are offered in addition to standard-issue rear-wheel drive. Recent updates include a luxury-oriented Overland trim and equipment package.
The luxury version of the retro-styled Jeep Commander SUV is called the Jeep Commander Overland.
