The new-for-2007 Mercedes-Benz GL-Class is a seven-passenger luxury SUV built on a reinforced unibody structure. Unibody means the body is all one piece. Traditional SUVs are built by bolting a body on a ladder-like frame. The unibody structure gives the GL-Class fewer squeaks and rattles, and more of a car-like feel than truck-based competitors. The GL450 model gets a 4.6-liter V8 engine, with a seven-speed automatic transmission. The GL320 CDI has a 3.0-liter V6 diesel. All-wheel drive is standard. Low-range gearing for extreme off-roading is optional. An available air suspension system affords the choice of a more comfortable or sportier ride, with adjustable ground clearance. A long list of standard features includes leather, heated, power front seats and eight airbags.
Mercedes-Benz takes a crack at the full-size SUV market with a vehicle that marries expected luxury with surprising off-road prowess.
