The Mercury Mountaineer SUV is an upscale version of the midsize Ford Explorer. The base model has a V6 engine; the top Premier version gets a V8. It can seat up to seven and can be equipped to tow heavy loads. Although built on a truck-like frame, the Mountaineer is comfortable enough to drive around town, if not as nimble and secure as competing car-based SUVs. Its interior is well appointed and well insulated from road, wind and mechanical noise. One of its most glaring flaws is poor rear visibility, exacerbated by tinted windows and third-row seats. Options include power-deployed running boards, a power-folding third-row seat and satellite navigation.
The midsize Mercury Mountaineer SUV is a slightly more-upscale alternative to the Ford Explorer.
