Porsche's least-expensive convertible receives nominal updates for 2007, including slightly more-powerful engines in both base and S models. Few, if any, sports cars do so many things so well: The Boxster has superior handling dynamics, exhilarating engine performance, great gas mileage and a comfortable ride with two trunks that fit lots of stuff. Unlike the rear-engine 911, the Boxster carries its engine in the middle of the chassis, just ahead of the rear wheels. The base Boxster has a 245-hp 2.7-liter six-cylinder engine coupled to a five-speed manual transmission. The S version receives a larger, 295-hp 3.4-liter six-cylinder and a six-speed-manual gearbox. Both models can be equipped with an updated five-speed automatic transmission that offers manual gear selection. A long list of cosmetic and functional upgrades is available, but options tend to be pricey.
The newest Boxster S gets the 295-hp Cayman S engine for $3,400 less -- plus the bonus of a drop-top. What's not to like?
