The Saab 9-7X is the most luxurious version of a slew of SUVs from General Motors that are built off the same architecture, including the Chevrolet TrailBlazer, Buick Rainier, GMC Envoy and Isuzu Ascender. The 9-7X carries Saab-specific styling cues and other details; for instance, the ignition is located in the center console behind the gear lever. This harks back to the Saab tradition of having the ignition on the floor, between the front seats. The base 9-7X 4.2i has a 4.2-liter six-cylinder engine. The 9-7X 5.3i has a 5.3-liter V8 engine with Active Fuel Management, which disables half the cylinders when they are not needed, to save fuel. A four-speed automatic is the only transmission offered. All-wheel drive and StabiliTrak stability control are standard. Overall performance is similar to the TrailBlazer, et al. A lack of low-range gearing limits its off-road utility. The Saab 9-7X is due to be discontinued, perhaps at the end of the 2007 model year.
The faux-Swedish Saab 9-7X SUV may be heading toward the end of the trail.
