The Subaru Outback Wagon is a more rugged-looking rendition of the automaker's Legacy Wagon. It gets SUV-like styling cues and a slightly higher ride height than the rest of the Legacy lineup, to give the car a more outdoorsy appearance. The Outback Wagon comes in three versions: The base model is powered by a peppy, 2.5-liter "boxer" four-cylinder engine that delivers adequate acceleration; the 2.5XT Limited Wagon packs a turbocharged, 2.5-liter engine; the top 3.0R L.L. Bean Edition Wagon offers a smoother, 3.0-liter six-cylinder engine. The turbocharged engine and the six-cylinder both produce about 40 percent more muscle than the base engine.
With rugged styling cues, a higher ride height and all-wheel drive, the Subaru Outback Wagon is a reasonable alternative to an upscale SUV.
