Vehicle Summary: 2008 Ford Explorer

The midsize Ford Explorer is the brand's mainstream truck-based midsize SUV. While its luster has been lost to newer crossover models, it remains handsome and capable, with a choice of V6 or V8 engines and rear- or four-wheel drive. As befits a family-oriented vehicle, it comes with myriad safety and convenience features. Fuel economy is not its strong suit, however, and its off-road and towing abilities tend to be lost upon its mass-market audience. A similar version, offering more upscale styling and optional all-wheel drive instead of four-wheel drive, is sold as the Mercury Mountaineer.
