The Volvo S40 sedan is nimble and peppy, if not overtly sporty. For its size, this compact sedan is accommodating and comfortable. Distinctly Swedish styling sets it apart from competitors -- particularly the "floating" center console inside. The base model comes with front-wheel drive and a five-cylinder engine that is competent, but neither particularly powerful nor fuel efficient; an optional turbocharged five-cylinder engine ups performance considerably and can be ordered with all-wheel drive. Both automatic and manual transmissions are available, depending on the model. As befits the brand, many safety features are on hand. The Volvo V50 is the wagon version of this sedan.

Standing Out Without Shouting

The Volvo S40 is peppy, nimble, and refined. However, it isn't particularly fuel efficient, despite being the smallest sedan Volvo sells.

What's New

  • An Automatic Hazard Warning system and a tire pressure monitor are newly standard
  • Interior updates include new air vents, expanded front-door storage pockets and a redesigned center console (with a larger storage space), armrest and handbrake lever. The 2.4i can now be fitted with Nordic Light Oak wood inlays as part of the Select Package.
  • An audiophile-grade 650-watt Dynaudio audio system is newly available
  • The Blind Spot Information System is now a standalone option
  • Exterior updates include a new grille, front fascia, lower air intakes, headlamps, and taillights
  • Turbocharged five-cylinder engine now generates 227 hp (up from 218 hp)
  • Active high-intensity headlamps are newly optional on T5 and T5 AWD
